Looking for a beautiful lawn that will make you the envy of the neighborhood? Using proper mowing techniques and using the right equipment is important! Follow our four top mowing practices, in combination with annual lawn maintenance such as the GP Lawn Doctor Spring Clean Up Service and the GP Lawn Doctor Liquid Fertilizer Weed Control Routine, and your neighbours will be asking your secrets in no time!
1.Use a Well Maintained Mower
Having a beautifully mowed lawn does NOT require the latest and greatest lawnmower! However, the mower you use to cut your grass should be maintained and operated as per the manufacturer’s recommendations. Manufacturer recommendations can be found in your mower manual. If you have lost your manual or purchased your mower second-hand, many manufacturers post their manuals online. Your manual will indicate ideal fuel, oil or other lubricants required by your machine. When re-fuelling your mower always ensure you are off of the grass! Spilled fuel will leave unsightly yellow patches in your lawn.
2. Keep Your Mower Clean
In addition to regular mower maintenance, it is incredibly important to keep your mower clean! After each use, turn the mower off and sweep the mower deck to clear away debris and wipe up any spilled fuel or oil away with a rag. The underside of the lawnmower can also collect a large amount of buildup, this does not have to be completed every mow but should be checked a few times throughout the season to keep your mower in good working condition and prevent excessive wear to mower blades.
3. Sharpen or Replace Your Mower Blades
To mow like a pro you need to have sharp, well maintained mower blades! Dull or damaged mower blades can cause several issues with your lawn. If blades are dull, they will shred or split your grass instead of cutting it, this causes unnecessary damage and stress to the tip of the grass. If your mower blades are damaged they will leave you with uneven grass lengths or strips of uncut grass which can be very frustrating.
4. Use Correct Mower Heights and Directions
When it comes to cutting your grass, taking off less is always best! Many people cut their grass too short which can be problematic for several reasons. If your lawn has uneven surfaces due to natural settling, heavy thatch or raised tree roots a low mower height may result in serious damage to your lawn. It is always better to leave your grass a little longer and to mow more often. If your mower is set too low it puts unnecessary stress on the lawn, if you cut too short regularly it can make the grass unhealthy and allow for weeds to creep in. Lastly, ensure you switch up the pattern used every second time you mow, this will prevent damage and create even surfaces.
